Acutally it is my first time attending Ubicomp. May the following reports help you understand how ubimcomp 2008 looks like.
Style:
- The best conference in ubiquitous and pervasive computing
- Single-track international conference
- In cooperation with ACM, ACM culture
- Sponsored by Microsoft (Golden), Nokia(Golden), Samsung, etc. sponsor
- Very respect students like Ph.D. candidate
- People are very active and interactive:
o Many questions/comments for a presentation
o Intensive offline communications
o Many suggestions for improving the conference
Scale:
- 226 submissions, 37 full paper (16.4%)
- 1 workshop dedicated for doctoral colloquium
- 1 demo/poster/video session
- More than 300 attendees
People
- Industrial: Microsoft (7), Intel (>=15), Yahoo (>=2), Samsung (>=10), Nokia (>=3), etc.
- Academia:
o 50%+ of professors and students come from the top universities, such as CMU, MIT, Cambridge, UC Berkely, Stanford, etc.
o People from university of Washington are also very active in this conference. Some students have an internship with MSR Redmond.
Research Area
Almost all the talks given in this conference are closely related to mobility and locations.
- AI: A group of people, doing research about human activity recognition, have moved from AAAI to this conference, as the quality of AAAI has dropped down in recent years. In contrast to other attendees, they are more technical persons, who love to use data mining and machine learning algorithms, such as Markov model and topic model etc.
- CHI: Over one third of researchers are with CHI background. I think they are more conceptual persons, who pay more attentions to the computer human interaction in a ubiquitous environment.
- Ubiquitous Multimedia: This is a relatively novel research direction, which focuses on social media and multimedia sharing in a ubiquitous environment.
- Others: location-based service, Web privacy and security, context-aware computing, etc.
